This grand sky piercing hotel has a terrific city centre location, attached to the enormous Kerry Centre shopping mall, around the corner from Jing An park. Smart and efficient, it is popular with business types, but the wide range of amenities and excellent service are sure to be appreciated by all travellers.
In downtown Jing An, on the old Puxi side of the river, with plenty to do in the immediate area, as well as great public transport links. Connected to the hotel’s lower levels is the enormous Kerry Centre, packed with designer stores and restaurants. The gaudy gold Jing An Temple is a few minutes’ walk away, as is Jing An Park.
Address: 1218 Yan’an Middle Rd, Jing’an, Shanghai, China.
Style & character
Modern opulence. In the lobby; lofty ceilings, oceans of marble and waterfall chandeliers combined with curving walls, dramatic floral displays and double-height windows, endowing the space with a sense of light. Although it’s been a big hit with business travellers since it opened in 2014, it happily works for couples and families too.
Service & facilities
Warm and attentive, with a good amount of English speaking staff (which isn’t always the case at Shanghai’s five star hotels). Horizon Club guests also get access to a fantastic 55th floor lounge, which has eye-popping city views and lays out a bounty of top-quality food and drinks throughout the day. Elsewhere, there’s a pleasant indoor swimming pool (the rule enforcing swimming caps was less enjoyable), 24-hour gym staffed by buff personal trainers, and an excellent spa.
The hotel’s 509 rooms are located between floors 30 to 59, which means there isn’t a bad view from any of them (although it is worth splashing out a bit extra to gawp at the 632-metre Shanghai Tower five miles away in Pudong). Thick carpets woven with elegant blossoms, hand-painted silk screens and large white marble bathrooms complete with concealed TVs ensure the rooms feel boutique rather than boring.
